Getting Perspective
For me as well, the many cycles of time has given me a much needed perspective - how small our actions become on geological time has been solace for me on dark days. I love the perspective on shorter timescales, as I haven't explored that so much and I see how it could be valuable too in putting my own day-to-day struggles in perspective.
There are other perspective shifts that I've found helpful. The many different ways to sense the world makes me joyful and humble. I love that bees and butterflies see patterns in flowers that we don't see because their eyes are tuned differently. I imagine what it would be like to feel pressure as an additional sense the way fish do.
It humbles me that the world and universe is so much grander than my - or any creature's - sense-perception can know. It takes me away from the endless human argument about what is 'real' and into the mystery that there does exist a multi-faceted multi-layered truth that is bigger than any of our efforts to understand and describe it or our efforts to philosophize it away. When science is expressed in an know-it-all way that does not acknowledge bounds on our understanding it is doing us all a disservice. When science explores deeper into these patterns of the universe with awe and humility it is doing us all a service by expanding our sense-perception further into that truth - so we can see what the bee sees, think from a geological perspective, and work with the forces of nature. What an incredibly joyous exploration!
